The National Stud is looking to recruit a Chief Operating Officer based at The National Stud, Newmarket.

Role summary

 This is a new role, reporting to the Stud Director, and forming part of the Senior Management Team at the National Stud. It is an excellent opportunity to contribute towards the overall strategic and operational planning of the business and offers the prospect of working in a unique and exciting environment.

We are looking for a professional with business acumen and financial/commercial awareness to lead and manage the non-stud functions of the organisation.  You will be analysing the internal operations of the business, identifying areas for policy enhancement, monitoring performance, identifying problems and proposing new ideas and ways of working.

The skills required will include confident management abilities, providing strong leadership and direction, a broad awareness of marketing, financial budgeting and knowledge of education services, the horseracing industry and Thoroughbred breeding. The ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with the education, horseracing and breeding sector and key internal and external senior stakeholders is crucial.

Some of the key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsibility for the line management of Office team members, the Coffee Shop, Hostel and Education teams
  • Provide operational leadership, management and support across The National Stud
  • Drive continuous improvement through flexible and creative responses, supporting the growth/evolution and development of The Stud
  • Regularly review and update organisational policies, ensuring they are fit for purpose
  • Act as a champion, representing and positively promoting The National Stud
  • Develop and roll out a strategy to proactively market and promote the courses run by The National Stud to ensure a wide range of applications
  • Develop the training offering to raise the profile of The National Stud Education Department, establishing it as the ‘training centre of choice’
  • Cultivate a strategy to proactively seek funding opportunities and develop application proposals in order for Education Department of The Stud to apply for funding grants


As part of the role you may be required to work occasional evenings and weekends. Some travel will also be expected, so it essential that you hold a full driving license and have access to a vehicle.
