TIME TEST (16hh, 2012 Dubawi x Passage Of Time)
£8,500 1st October SLF
A horse gifted with tremendous acceleration, Time Test offers breeders access to an elite, sound performer who is supported by one of Juddmonte Farm’s most successful families, all at an affordable fee.
He was precocious enough to win at two and fulfilled all of that promise at three for Roger Charlton, when his wins included the Joel and Tercentenary Stakes. Time Test had Group 1 winner Decorated Knight behind him in the Joel but it is for his devastating display in the Tercentenary at Royal Ascot for which he is well remembered. “Here, we believe, is the horse with more chance than any of being able to take down Golden Horn later in the season,” summarised Timeform following Time Test’s romp, for which they handed him a rating of 130p.
Time Test did indeed develop into that anticipated high level performer. He returned at four to win the Brigadier Gerard and York Stakes and run third in the Eclipse Stakes on unsuitably soft ground while a brief spell with Chad Brown in the US yielded Grade 1 placings in the Fourstardave Handicap and Manhattan Stakes.
A son of the all-conquering Dubawi, Time Test is out of two-year-old Group 1 winner Passage Of Time and a member of Juddmonte’s powerful Lost Virtue family also responsible for Twice Over, now one of the leading young lights of the South African stallion ranks.
With all that in mind, it is understandable that Time Test received a strong book of mares in his first season, a number of whom were supplied by a notable collection of shareholders.
A total of 22 of that 111-strong book were black-type performers, including dual Grade 1 winner and $1.4 million earner Jostle.
Jostle was also among 22 black-type producers within that book as the dam of the Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Adirondack King. Overall, it’s an impressive list, one that also includes Comic, the dam of Hong Kong legend Viva Pataca, Juddmonte’s Scuffle, dam of multiple Grade 3 winner Suffused, Exciting Times, dam of Grade 1 winner Gorella, Lynnwood Chase, dam of Group 1 winner Cannock Chase, Salutare, dam of this season’s high-class filly Worth Waiting, and Aurelia, dam of Oaks runner-up Harlequeen.
