As an outstanding racecourse performer with a blue-chip pedigree, Time Test looked an exciting sire proposition from the moment his retirement to the National Stud was announced. But events since his debut covering season in 2018 have enhanced his reputation even further.
First, the dual Group 2-winning and multiple Group 1-placed Juddmonte homebred is by Dubawi, whose standing as a sire of sires has skyrocketed in recent seasons thanks primarily to his exciting young son Night Of Thunder but also to the emergence of promising first-season stallion New Bay.
Night Of Thunder supplied a record-equalling seven stakes winners among his first two-year-old runners and has compiled exceptionally high winners to runners strike-rates. New Bay, meanwhile, is also producing some compelling statistics and his early runners have included the Listed winner New Mandate.
There have been significant updates to Time Test’s maternal family, too. His Group 1-winning dam Passage Of Time, a sister to high-class pair Father Time and Timepiece, has since produced the classy Tempus, while top-notchers American Anthem and Yoshida have emerged on a page that already included elite winners All At Sea, Antonoe, Hilda’s Passion, Mutual Trust and Twice Over.
Furthermore, the strong support granted to Time Test at stud has been illustrated in many eye-catching pedigree updates among his first crop who will turn two in 2021. They include half-brothers to Classic winners Logician and Star Catcher, bred by Juddmonte and Hascombe and Valiant Studs respectively, as well as a half-sister to narrowly beaten St Leger runner-up Berkshire Rocco who was bred by Mount Coote Stud.
Other highlights among Time Test’s impressive first crop, the result of 111 mares covered, include a half-sister to top-flight winners Laughing and Viva Pataca; a filly out of dual US Grade 1 scorer Jostle; another filly out of high-class sprinter Night Carnation; and a colt out of Classic-placed Ardbrae Tara.
With all that in mind, it was no surprise to see Time Test’s initial sale offerings in strong demand when they came under the hammer as foals. They sold for an average of around 25,000gns – an excellent return on his opening fee of £8,500 – and hit a high of 62,000gns. Purchasers included such shrewd judges as Malcolm Bastard, Blandford Bloodstock, James Delahooke, Howson and Houldsworth Bloodstock, George Mullins, Larry Stratton and Yeomanstown Stud.
Discerning buyers who helped themselves to a Time Test yearling at the early sales of 2020 included Nick Bradley Racing, Tim Easterby and Rabbah Bloodstock.
Everything looks in place for the stallion to make a fast start with his debut two-year-olds in 2021. And considering he was still showing strong form at the age of five on the racecourse himself, his progeny should stand the test of time.
