Marcel (16.1hh, 2013 Lawman x Mauresmo)
£5,000 1st October SLF
As a hugely talented two-year-old, Marcel won the Gr.1 Racing Post Trophy in a stunning last to first performance. One which saw him make easy work of defeating a field which included subsequent Gr.1 winners Johannes Vermeer and Deauville.
This impressive performance, on just his third start, was enough to earn him a Timeform rating of 118, putting him in the company of Air Force Blue and Shalaa in the top 3 European 2yo colts of his generation.
Now in his second season at stud, he has let down into a truly imposing stallion. He has been supported by some of the industry’s most respected figures in his first year at stud, including Stephen Hillen, John Troy, Bill Dwan, Rory Mahon and David Hyland, to name just a few.
His first book of mares included over 30% Stakes performers or producers, and from beautiful black type families including those of Gr.1 winners Dick Whittington, Moriarty and Classic winner Virginia Waters.
By a son of Invincible Spirit and out of a Northern Dancer-line mare who hails from the family of Group 1 winners At Talaq (Champion sprinting Sire) and Annoconnor, Marcel’s pedigree and Group1-winning 2-year old form should contribute a combination of precociousness and strength to breeders at seriously good value.
His first foal was born at Martin Walsh’s Kiltown Stud on 01 February, and was bred by Marcel’s owner Paul Makin. The bay colt is out of Visalia (Dansili), a daughter of 1000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters and a half-sister to Listed winner Emperor Claudius, from the family of Chachamaidee, In The Wings and High Rise.
Martin Walsh said of the new arrival “he is a lovely, quality colt with great size, balance and a lot of presence”. Other mares expecting his first foals this year include sisters to Dick Whittington and Moriarty, and Group/Listed winners Sesmen, Mahaatheer, Waterways and What’s Up Pussycat.
