LANCASTER BOMBER (16.1hh, 2014 War Front x Sun Shower)

    £8,500 (1st October SLF)

Famous for his extravagant front-running style, Lancaster Bomber is the 2018 Gr.1 Tattersalls Gold Cup hero who was among the very finest of his generation at two, three and four. Winner of his maiden in August as a juvenile, he went on to be runner-up in the Dewhurst, in two Breeders’ Cup championship events, and in the fastest-ever running of the St James’s Palace Stakes. His Gr.1 victory at Leopardstown took his earnings well over the million-pound mark.

Lancaster Bomber’s battling second-place finish behind Churchill at Newmarket at two – fending off that high-class pair Blue Point and Thunder Snow – came in a time faster than 39 of the Dewhurst’s runnings as a Gr.1 contest. He was faster than 2018 winner Too Darn Hot too.

At three, his run in the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes when caught late home came in a time fast enough to have won every single running of the Royal Ascot showpiece, established in 1834. He had Churchill behind him that day, as well as confirming his superiority over Thunder Snow. Lancaster Bomber later shipped to America for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, going down to local star World Approval but defeating fellow shipper Ribchester.

Lancaster Bomber’s race record stands comparison with that of his sire, War Front, a Gr.2 winner at four who was runner-up in five more Graded Stakes, two of them Gr.1s. War Front, who retired to stud at $12,500, has gone on to become one of the world’s most prepotent speed influences of the day, now commanding a fee of $250,000.

The last great son of Danzig, War Front is America’s leading auction sire – above the likes of Medaglia d’Oro and Tapit – and his offspring have also excelled in Europe, winning the Middle Park and Cheveley Park Stakes, the July Cup, the Queen Anne and the Juddmonte International, plus three Dewhursts since 2014. War Front’s first European-raced stallion son, Declaration Of War, has sired the French 2,000 Guineas winner in his debut crop.

Lancaster Bomber, who has a 123 rating in Timeform, is out of the excellent Indian Ridge mare Sun Shower, also dam of Barney Roy’s sire Excelebration. This is the deep Ardenode family of Irish Classic winners Sarah Siddons, Princess Pati and Ragusa. His pedigree is free of Danehill, Green Desert and Sadler’s Wells.

A record-breaker on racing’s greatest stage who consistently traded punches with the champions of his crop, Lancaster Bomber has the form, physique and the family to make an even greater impact at stud. He is higher rated than such influential second-generation scions of the Danzig line as Invincible Spirit, Danehill Dancer and Kodiac and was also rated higher than leading speed sires Siyouni, Scat Daddy, Dark Angel and Showcasing. Chocks away!
