From the moment your mare arrives at the National Stud our aim is to provide you and your mare, with the best service possible in the Thoroughbred breeding industry.
Working with some of the best vets and farriers in the business along with our strong team of stud staff, our goal is excellent service at a fair cost. To this end we are proud to be one of the few major studs that does not charge a groom’s fee for mares walking in to our stallions.
Foaling
We are delighted to accept mares for foaling and believe that a clean and well equipped Foaling Unit along with 24hr supervision of all in foal mares gives your Thoroughbred the best start in life.
The purpose built Foaling Unit comprises 25 foaling boxes each equipped specifically to house in foal mares and their young offspring through their first few days.
Our veterinary team perform first day foal checks and provide advice throughout the mare and foal’s stay at the stud.
We believe that good communication is of paramount importance so owners receive a detailed foaling report for each mare along with photos taken during the first 48 hrs of the foal’s life. We also update all mare owners on a regular basis about the status of their mare throughout her stay.
Foals are handled daily and experience routine veterinary and farrier procedures during their stay.
We also Weatherbys micro-chip and DNA blood type all foals born on the stud in preparation for their foal registration.
We will micro-chip foals that arrive “at foot” at the request of owners.
Permanent boarding
Permanent Boarders benefit from a preferential daily boarding rate and are looked after all year round by a dedicated and confident team. All registrations for permanent boarders are taken care of by the stud office and we encourage owners to visit their mares whenever they like.
Seasonal boarding
Mares visiting our own stallions or mares walking out to stallions in the Newmarket area and beyond are welcome to the stud for foaling and for the duration of the breeding season.
From arrival to departure mares are given the individual attention they need to have the best possible chance of returning home in foal.
Veterinary work is undertaken by some of the most respected and experienced equine reproductive vets available: Huw Neal at Newmarket Equine Hospital and Andrew McGladdery from Rossdales and Partners.
Dodson and Horrell provide us with a range of customised feeds designed to enhance the natural grazing on the stud and help the mares through each stage of their stay.
Simon Curtis and his team number many years of experience and deal with routine hoof trims to extensive remedial work with equal vigour and professionalism. Transport to and from covers and the vets is provided by W E Collier & Sons who have been working with the National Stud for over twenty years. Our wormers and worming advice is provided by Virbac, the largest supplier of Equine wormers in the area.

“We were very impressed by the ‘first class’ standard of service, care and communication provided by the staff at the National Stud. In particular the handling and care which that mares and foals received was exemplary and reflected in their condition and attitude upon return.”
