DUAL European Gr.1 winning miler DICK TURPIN (Arakan) proved himself to be one of the toughest and most consistent milers of his generation. Throughout his race career of 9 wins and 5 places, he defeated no less than 25 individual Group winners and performers including CITYSCAPE, CANFORD CLIFFS and LOUPE DE VEGA.
DICK TURPIN rocketed on to the scene as a 2YO in training with Richard Hannon by winning all of his first 4 races including the Gr.2 Richmond Stakes on only his 3rd racecourse outing. His first Gr.1 win came in Chantilly as a 3yo when he won the Prix Jean Prat easily by 4 lengths from SIYOUNI (won Prix Jean Luc Lagardere Gr.1) and XTENSION (winner of BMW Champions Mile Gr.1). In the same season he produced an eye catching 2nd place in the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot (Gr.1) and in the 2000 Guineas behind MAKFI as well as beating stable mate and 5 time Gr.1 winner CANFORD CLIFFS to boot. He re-emerged for his 4 year old career with an impressive win in the Gr.2 bet365 Mile at Sandown followed 2 months later by a track record breaking win in the Gr.1 Premio Vittorio Di Capua (San Siro). This win capped an impressive Group class career which spanned three years and included two Gr.1 wins, three Gr.2 wins and two wins in Gr.3 races.
DICK TURPIN’S sire ARAKAN (Nureyev) was a smart performer over 6-8f and has produced some eye-catching stock including 2012 Craven Stakes (Gr.3) and Champagne Stakes (Gr.2) winner TRUMPET MAJOR.
DICK TURPIN’S first book of mares was a high class assortment with well over 70% of his mares being winners or dams of winners. There was also a quality selection of stakes winners, performers and producers. His first mare of the season was SAINT ANN(Geiger Counter), the dam of Listed performer SIENNA STORM (Peintre Celebre) and three other winners. The National Stud supported their new stallion with Listed placed IMPERIALISTIC (Imperial Ballet) who is the dam of Listed placed IMPERIALISTIC DIVA (Haafhd) and 2012 German 1,000gns (Gr.2) winner ELECTRELANE (Dubawi). Listed placed RAINBOW END (Botanic) and JUST DREAMS (Salse), dam of stakes performer and Gr.3 runner up, BOUNTY QUEST (Fasliyev) were other notable coverings, along with Molecomb Stakes (Gr.3) winner MISTY EYED (Paris House) and Gr.2 and Listed winners BIRTHDAY SUIT (Daylami) and EILEAN SHONA (Suave Dancer).
DICK TURPIN shuttled to Mungrup Stud in Western Australia to take up stallion duties over the winter where he has attracted a lot of attention. His book in Australia includes quality Southern Hemisphere mares headlined by PEGGI’S BID (Marooned), the dam of Gr.1 winner and Kings Stand Stakes winner MISS ANDRETTI (Ihtiram) and COTTAGE ROSE (Cheraw), the dam of Gr.1 winner EL PRESIDENTE (Dante’s Fury).
DICK TURPIN will have his first foals in 2013.
