We are exceedingly proud to introduce dual Gr. 1 winner DICK TURPIN to our stallion roster for the 2012 season.
“Dick Turpin proved to be one of toughest and most consistent milers of his generation, not only did he win two Group 1s, including the Prix Jean Prat, but was also a two time Guineas runner-up who defeated Canford Cliffs.” Clive Webb Carter, Pedigree expert.
This handsome son of Arakan was bought by The National Stud after his impressive win in the Gr.1 Premio Vittorio Di Capua (San Siro) at the end of the 2011 flat season. This win capped an impressive Group class career which spanned three years and included two Gr.1 wins, three Gr.2 wins and two wins in Gr.3 races. His first Gr.1 win came in Chantilly as a 3yo when he won the Prix Jean Prat easily by four lengths from Siyouni (won Prix Jean Luc Lagardere Gr.1) and Xtension (winner of BMW Champions Mile Gr.1). In the same season he also impressed with a second place in the St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot (Gr.1) and a second in the 2000 Guineas behind Makfi as well as beating stable mate and 5 time Gr.1 winner Canford Cliffs.
He re-emerged for his 4 year old career with an impressive win in the Gr.2 bet365 Mile at Sandown. His class shone through again when winning the Summer Mile Stakes (Gr.2) at Ascot, leading his jockey Pat Dobbs to comment: “They didn’t go very quick but I wasn’t worried as Dick Turpin was a class above them...” (www.racingpost.com).
Importantly for commercial breeders, he is a group winning 2 year old that has trained on and performed and succeeded at the highest level as a 3 year old and an older horse. In total he has won 9 races and been placed 5 times and he has beaten more than 25 group winners and performers including Canford Cliffs, Cityscape and Lope De Vega.
His good looks and athleticism are what immediately attracted Managing Director Brian O’Rourke to him as a stallion prospect:
“Dick Turpin is an exceptional horse; not only does his race record speak for itself but he has so much quality to him too. He has a fantastic walk and is put together beautifully – I think his good looks and top quality race performances will really appeal to owner breeders and commercial breeders alike.”
Modern stallions not only need to be bred well and race well, they need to provide breeders with flexibility and present new possibilities for their mares. Dick Turpin not only provides all of this but gives breeders the opportunity to invest in an eye-catching top class sprinter/miler for a very reasonable price.
