Pastoral Pursuits' 2 year old filly Mefite got her sire his first juvenile winner of this season when she took the Premio Cape Cross at Roma yesterday.  The gutsy filly put in a seriously determined performance and showed an impressive turn of foot when closing fast in the closing stages to take the race on the wire from Only For Revenge in second.

The 2014 season has not been going for long, and we haven't had to wait long for the first big win of the season for Bahamian Bounty. Mick's Yer Man was Bahamian Bounty's first two year old winner of the 2013 season when he won the Brocklesby, so it stands to reason that he is his sire's first Listed winner of the 2014 season.

Windsor provided the backdrop for some of Pastoral Pursuits' precocious two year old runners to make an early mark on the 2014 flat season. Both Polar Vortex and No One Knows started in the 2.20pm Grant Thornton Maiden Auction Fillies' Stakes and finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, on what was the first time out for both horses.

On 13th December 18 students completed their Pre-Apprenticeship training at the National Stud. Their achievements we recognised by a presentation of certificates for their hard work and dedication throughout the 9 week course.  Additionally the Jessica Furneaux Memorial Shield for the Most Outstanding Student was awarded to Tomas Smith.

It is hard to believe that it's that time of year again already, but at 01.30am this morning our first foal of 2014 arrived.  After a thorough check up by our vets today she was off out to the paddock in the sunshine with her dam. It never seems to matter how long you've done this job for, the first foal of a new season is always really great to see.

We have been awaiting the arrival of Dick Turpin's first crop of foals in the sales ring for what seems like a very long time now, and they did not dissappoint! Tattersalls December Sale saw 11 Lots sold for an average of 20,755gns, and buyers were some of the industry's shrewdest judges, including Peter & Ross Doyle, Johnny McKeever and Stephen Hillen.

News from Australia this morning is that Dick Turpin's first foal has arrived.  The bay colt out of Sharufa was born at Mungrup Stud in Western Australia, and is reported as being a nice athletic youngster with a strong hindquarter, by Mungrup Stud owner Gray Williamson.

Former National Stud stallion DESERT SUN died at the age of 24 at Eliza Park Stud in Australia.  He was the sire of New Zealand Champion SUN LINE and the damsire of Australian super filly BLACK CAVIAR.  During his career he sired over 30 stakes winners; the best of which was SUN LINE who won 13 Gr.1 races.

National Stud headliner Bahamian Bounty again proved his credentials as one of the UK and Ireland's top sires when the Racing Post featured no less than three of this year's two year olds in their Hot 50 two year olds of 2012.  Among them was the Mark Johnston trained Superoo out of the mare Roo who was consigned by The National Stud at the Tattersalls December Sales in 2009 for 200,000gns

The National Stud has successfully negotiated a deal to shuttle dual Gr.1 winning miler DICK TURPIN to Australia for the 2012 Southern Hemisphere season. The project, spear-headed by National Stud Chairman Ben Sangster and Managing Director Brian O’Rourke will see the Stud’s newest stallion travel to Western Australia and stand at Mungrup Stud (owned by Gray and Jan Williamson).

The National Stud’s newest recruit DICK TURPIN (Arakan) has had his first mare scanned in foal.  SAINT ANN (Geiger Counter) was the first mare to be covered by the dual Group 1 winning miler; she is owned by Gary and Lesley Middlebrook and is the dam of four winners including Listed placed and Gr.3 performer SIENNA STORM.

The first foal of the season is always a milestone for the Stud.  This year the first arrival was a good looking, strong bay colt by Juddmonte stallion Oasis Dream out of the mare PRIMA LUCE (Galileo).  The mare was due on 16th January and the foal appeared right on time. The colt is enjoying daily turnout with his dam and mare and foal are doing very well.
