Sergeant Cecil arrives at The National Stud

Sergeant Cecil will be spending several months of each year at The National Stud, giving members of the public the opportunity to visit this wonderful equine racing hero.

Sergeant Cecil was trained for the majority of his eight-year career by Rod Millman at Kentisbeare in Devon, and is owned by Terry Cooper, who purchased him privately as a foal for just £1,000. Mr Cooper said: “Sergeant Cecil is fit and well after his final race and I am delighted that he is going to spend some of his time at The National Stud. Cecil is a very outgoing horse who loves to meet people and be the centre of attention, so a quiet life out in a paddock was never going to suit him. Staying at the National Stud will be ideal for him and I’m pleased that his many fans will be able to visit him there.”

Tina Dawson, Commercial Director of The National Stud, added: “We’re thrilled to have Sergeant Cecil at The National Stud. He had a long and distinguished career; winning many hearts with his unique handicap treble and then going on to prove himself in the very best company the following season. He is certain to be very popular with our tour visitors.”

Keeping Sergeant Cecil company at The National Stud is 2004 Grand National winner Amberleigh House, owned by John Halewood and who gave Red Rum’s trainer Ginger McCain a fairytale fourth win in the world’s most famous steeplechase.

Visitors to the National Stud will have an opportunity to see both horses as part of the twice daily tours which start at 11.15 am and 2.00 pm every day of the week. For further information, or to book a tour, please call the Stud on 01638 663464.
