Trainees clear first hurdle
On Friday 14th December, The National Stud waved goodbye to 20 trainees, all of whom had completed 9 weeks intensive training on their way towards achieving an Apprenticeship in Racehorse Care with Breeding Option.
Aged from 16-19 years old, trainees came from all over the country and were selected from over 65 applicants. They came with little or no experience of working in the Thoroughbred breeding industry.
During the course trainees gained many basic skills including experience of sales preparation. The Stud expressed its gratitude to other studs who gave their support by offering trainees the opportunity to implement these skills by working at Tattersalls Sales.
An award for the student who, in the opinion of the National Stud Staff, acquired the most from the 9 week course was awarded to Adam Bell who started the course with absolutely no previous equine experience. Adam’s decision to apply for the course was influenced by his passion for the racing industry and his ambition to become a bloodstock agent.
Having completed the initial training course at the National Stud, trainees are found placements where they can go on to complete their NVQ training and further their experience. Studs all over the country have taken on trainees including farms such as Juddmonte, Templeton and Shadwell.
