National Stud's Mobile Training Courses Heralded a Great Success

The first two regional training courses, organised as part of an exciting new initiative by the National Stud at Newmarket, have met with universal approval.

The two courses, held at Mick Channon's West Ilsley stables on 22nd and 24th May, and at Newsells Park Stud on 29th and 31st May, were fully booked, each attracting the maximum number of 25 delegates from a wide range of breeding operations.

Derek Christopher, stud owner and member of the British Stud and Stable Staff Training Scheme who attended both courses, said "This represents a tremendous opportunity for staff who are not able to attend the residential courses in Newmarket. The National Stud's Education & Training Programme utilises top class lecturers and it is fantastic that this expertise is being taken to other regions. The first two courses were superb and, in my view, the initiative should most definitely be encouraged".

Topics covered on the courses included all aspects of care of the mare and foal, as well as sales, nutrition, farriery, and first aid.

Caroline Turnbull, Training and Recruitment Manager at the TBA, also welcomed the launch of this initiative. "I was really impressed by these two courses" she said, "they were well organised and the delegates were clearly very enthusiastic. This project fits in totally with the TBA's policy of making educational opportunities available to stud staff around the country".

These initial two courses, which were sponsored by Newsells Park and the Jacobs Foundation, were set up as a pilot scheme. However Andrew Parrish, National Stud Chairman, is confident that this early success and endorsement by all concerned will result in a comprehensive mobile training programme being made available on a wide geographical basis next year. "We will, of course, require further sponsorship to achieve this", he said, "and I would welcome communication from any individual or organisation wishing to be part of the enhancement of training opportunities within the UK Thoroughbred industry".
