National Stud training goes on the road

A pilot National Stud scheme to help people advance their careers in the Thoroughbred breeding industry was launched this week at the West Ilsley stables of trainer Mick Channon.

Run by The National Stud, the Mobile Stud Training Courses last two days (4pm-8pm) and are for 25 delegates: the two days at West Ilsley started on Tuesday and conclude this afternoon (Thursday), while the other two-day trial is at Newsells Park Stud in Royston, Hertfordshire on May 29 and 31.

The courses are free to invited delegates and seek to offer a concentrated and distilled version of the training offered to students on The National Stud's internationally-recognised Diploma course. The same high-profile experts from Newmarket will present the lectures.

Anyone working in the Thoroughbred stud industry is eligible for the Mobile Stud Training Courses, which will be rolled out across the country in 2008 should the pilot dates prove a success.

The West Ilsley course is already full, but there are still two places available at Newsells Park – anyone interested should contact Tabitha Smith at The National Stud (01638 663 464, tabitha.smith@nationalstud.co.uk).

The courses include four lectures each day, including topics such as reproductive cycle of the mare, maintenance of the mare during pregnancy, feeding breeding stock and selling the young stock.

The pilot courses have been sponsored by Newsells Park Stud and the Jacobs Foundation.

Andrew Parrish, Chairman of The National Stud, said: "This initiative enables The National Stud to extend its education and training programmes from Newmarket to stud staff across the country, which we hope can only benefit the breeding industry as a whole.

"I would like to thank both Mick Channon and Newsells Park Stud for so generously hosting these Mobile Stud Training Courses, which have been kindly sponsored by the Jacobs Foundation and Newsells Park Stud."
